Do I Need an Inspection To Renew My Tags in Vermont?
Yes, all motor vehicles registered in Vermont must undergo an annual safety and emissions inspection before their registration is renewed. Vermont law mandates that vehicles complete both a safety inspection and a visual emissions inspection once each year, with vehicles 16 model years old or less also requiring an emissions or on-board diagnostic systems inspection.
Vermont no longer uses registration validation stickers on license plates. Act 41, signed into law on June 1, 2023, eliminated the annual or biennial validation sticker previously displayed on license plates.
Exemptions and Special Circumstances
Exhibition vehicles of model year 1940 or earlier that are registered as prescribed in the Vermont statutes are exempt from inspection, provided the vehicle is equipped as originally manufactured, is in good mechanical condition, and meets applicable standards of the inspection manual. Trailers registered under specific classifications are also exempt from inspection requirements.
